XP needed for each level

Characters gain levels by earning experience points (XP), mostly by defeating or overcoming creatures. The table shows the total XP needed to reach each level, the XP between one level and the next, and the proficiency bonus at that level. The values are the same in the 2014 and 2024 rules.

The early levels go quickly by design: 300 XP for level 2 and 900 for level 3 lets new characters find their feet within a session or two. From level 5 onward each level takes far more XP, and the curve flattens out again in the high teens.

How XP is awarded

When the party defeats a group of creatures, add up the XP values of every creature and divide the total evenly between the characters who took part. Each creature's XP depends on its challenge rating: a CR 1/4 goblin is worth 50 XP, a CR 2 ogre 450 XP and a CR 5 troll 1,800 XP.

XP per character = total creature XP ÷ number of characters

Under the 2014 encounter rules, use the creatures' normal XP when awarding experience, not the adjusted XP that includes the encounter multiplier. The multiplier only measures how hard the fight is. The encounter difficulty calculator shows both numbers.

Dungeon Masters can also award XP for non-combat challenges: escaping a trap, winning over a rival, or completing a quest. A common approach is to treat a significant challenge like a combat encounter of similar difficulty.

Using the party XP tracker

  1. Add each character in your group with their current XP total.
  2. After an encounter, enter the XP earned in Award XP and click Split between party. Use Give each character for quest rewards where everyone receives the full amount.
  3. The tracker announces any level-ups and shows how much XP each character needs for their next level.

Your party is saved in this browser, so it is still there next session. Use Share result to send the current totals to your players.

XP or milestone leveling?

With milestone leveling the Dungeon Master skips XP entirely and tells the players when to level up, usually after an important story moment. It keeps the party at the same level and removes bookkeeping, which is why many groups prefer it. XP leveling rewards every fight and gives players a clear sense of progress between sessions. Many published adventures suggest the level the characters should be at the start of each chapter, so either system works.

How long does it take to reach level 20?

A level 20 character has 355,000 XP. Because the encounter XP budgets grow along with the level thresholds, the number of fights needed per level stays fairly steady after the first few levels. In practice, campaigns that go all the way from level 1 to 20 usually take one to three years of regular play — and many end well before then.
